How to Ace Your SIWES Viva Voce Defence
The defence is where students panic. But it doesn't have to be. Here's exactly how to prepare, what questions to expect, and how to answer confidently.

What Is the SIWES Viva Voce?
The viva voce, also called the oral defence, is a short interview usually 15 to 30 minutes long where your school supervisor asks you questions about your SIWES experience and your technical report. It is designed to verify that you actually did the work you wrote about.
Most students who fail the defence do so not because they didn't do the work, but because they can't explain it clearly under pressure.
What Examiners Are Looking For
Your examiner wants to know three things:
- Did you actually do this work? Can you explain it in your own words?
- Do you understand what you did? Can you explain the why, not just the what?
- Did you learn from it? Can you connect it to your academic knowledge?
Common Defence Questions
About Your Organisation
- Tell me about the company where you did your SIWES.
- What department were you placed in and what does it do?
- How was the company organised?
About Your Work
- Walk me through the most significant project you worked on.
- What was the biggest technical challenge you faced? How did you solve it?
- What tools and technologies did you use? Why those and not alternatives?
About Your Learning
- What is the most important thing you learned during your SIWES?
- How does your SIWES experience relate to what you've studied in class?
- What would you do differently if you did it again?
Technical Deep-Dives
These depend on your course and what you wrote in your report. If you wrote about building a database, expect questions like: why did you choose MySQL over PostgreSQL, what does normalisation mean and why did you apply it, what would happen if two users tried to update the same record simultaneously.
How to Prepare
1. Re-read Your Report
Read your entire report the week before your defence. You should know every section well enough to discuss it without looking at the document.
2. Prepare a 2-Minute Summary
Practice saying: During my SIWES at [Company], I worked on [main project]. My key responsibilities were [3 things]. The most significant thing I learned was [insight].

It is okay to say you are not sure about something. Reasoning through it out loud is better than guessing confidently and being wrong. Connect everything back to your experience and ground abstract answers in specific things you actually did.
The defence is a conversation, not an interrogation. Your examiner wants you to pass.
